Getting a Bakersfield Job

Bakersfield is roughly located halfway between Los Angeles and Fresno, 180 km to the south and north respectively. It is the 11th fastest growing city in California with an estimated population of 322,818 as of 2008 and the 58th largest city in the nation according to U.S. Census estimates. Bakersfield is the 3rd largest inland city following Sacramento and Fresno.

Based on archeological evidence Yokut Indians used to live in lodges along the branches of the Kern River Delta and hunted tule elk, deer, antelope, grizzly bear, game birds, and fish. Father Francisco Garces a Spanish missionary was the first European to explore the area in 1776 and when the discovery of gold in California in 1848 happened, many settlers flooded the San Joaquin Valley and campaigned to drive the Yokuts off their land. This is where the conflict between Indians and the state began until the Yokuts were removed from their land and were transferred to reservations established for them. By 1870, Bakersfield was slowly becoming the prime town in Kern County and immigrants from other state such as Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and Southern California mostly employed in the oil industry relocated the city. On its foundation ceremony in 1869, it was named Bakersfield in honor of Colonel Thomas Baker.
